Multi Post 1- February 2026…

,

Greetings friends! Hope everyone is well and doing good work. One film recommendation is, “ Finding Vivian Maier.” As many of you know who read my posts, they usually have some length to them. I’ve been writing some shorts and putting them on my home page. This post features the first four shorts that I’ve done thus far in 2026. As always, thanks for reading and supporting the music…Cheers, Billy

Thanks for stopping by. Sometimes I record music on an analog recorder called a Tascam 238 Syncaset. It is an eight track recorder that uses cassette tape. I first had one in 1990. Here’s what it looks like:

I went to a Batteries Plus store two weeks ago and got to talking analog recorders with the rep that helped me. The next day I set up my 238 in our shed and recorded my Stella guitar, a gift from a dear friend, Buddy Love.

I had recently listened to some guitar quartet music by composer, Garry Eister, so I recorded six tracks of the Stella guitar. It is short, just 40 seconds. It stayed analog until being turned into an MP3, meaning it was recorded and mixed analog. Lots of fun…Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by. This banjo piece, “Betty’s Rattle,” was written for Betty Runge, music lover and member of the clean living space society. Last summer, in 2025, I learned from my neighbor here on Pea Ridge that musicians in these parts of Tennessee put the rattle from a rattle snake in their instruments, supposedly making their instruments sound better.

It sounded plausible to me, kind of a mojo thing. I had to verify my neighbors story and found out that the rattle in instruments has had many purposes. In fact, the rattle has a make up that causes static electricity and does in fact attract dust inside of an instrument, which I guess could make the sound…… cleaner…?

My neighbor gave me two rattles…

If you’re a banjo picker and like to play in D, here’s the score for “Betty’s Rattle.”

I hope you enjoy “Betty’s Rattle.”

Thanks for stopping by. My grandson’s birthday was last week, and I wrote a guitar piece for him. I’m calling it “The 22nd of January.“ My wife, Sue, plays old-time music on the banjo. She has introduced me to many old-time fiddle tunes. Some of them have titles that just feature a date like, “The 8th of January.” I’m playing Sue’s Martin D-18 with a thumb and index only finger-style. Hope you enjoy listening to “The 22nd of January.”

Thanks for stopping by. I’ve been doing scores of music and trying not to do too much doomscrolling. It hasn’t been easy. The latest thing I worked on was a theme for a podcast called, Hard Rain and Pink CadillacsMy songwriting partner, Geoffrey Himes, is a co-host with Mark Finkelpearl. Geoff wrote the words, and I wrote the music. Geoffrey, Mark and I collaborated on the production, and I recorded everything at my home studio, The Scratching Post, in November 2025. Geoff and Mark are doing some great interviews. Hope you check them out. Here’s the theme.

Here’s wishing everyone all good things for the New Year…

Billy, Absolutely loved The 22nd of January!! You don’t by chance have it written out on sheet music or tab do you? I’d be glad to buy a copy. John (John and Susi in MD)

Rattlesnakes! Well, at least it’s safer putting dead rattles inside. Don’t try putting live rattlesnakes in your guitar!

Greetings John. When my neighbor, who happens to be John as well, handed me the rattles I was a bit spooked thinking some venom got on them, silly me. Don’t worry John, my snake handling days are behind me. Best to you and Annie…

Billy, Greetings to you & Sue. I saw the Tascam 238 and had to reply. My favorite cassette based multitrack recorder ever!! Did you know Tascam had offered a version of it with Dolby “S” instead of DBX type II? Both sound great! I have the Porta-Studio version…the 688 with built in mixer, & DBX NR. Speaking of analog tape, John Hamacher (remember him?) recently gave me his old Akai Reel to Reel tape deck with about 8 reels of tape. Each reel is a 2ch Stereo, 7.5ips, ¼ track Paradise Pickers live recording that I did using John’s recorder back in the late 1970’s. The intent is to transfer all of them to digital, along with the 30-plus recordings I did on my old Akai cassette deck (wish I still had it!) during my Pickers soundman days. This will be a long-term project, very time consuming, but worth it. Once completed, I will provide you with either CD or USB flash drive copies.

Glad you’re doing well. Take Care and keep on picking, Ken Hardesty

Howdy Ken. Nice to hear from you. I did know Tascam did a Dolby “S” version of the 238. Are you still using your 688? I’m using an Allen and Heath mixer with my 238. Yes, I remember John Hamacher but had forgotten about the Akai recorder. That will be fun to hear those recordings, thanks for considering digitizing them. I have many cassettes of The Paradise Pickers in storage that I too would like to digitize. I wish I still had my Tascam 122 MK II. I still have my Panasonic SV-3700 Dat recorder but it needs service. It started eating tapes. I found a place called Pro Audio Revival that works on Dat machines. Hope you and Joann are well. Best to both of you and all of your projects…
